Derivation of Motion Formulas

These motion formulas are derived by combining the basic motion formulas. A little algebra is all it takes to create two very powerful formulas for accelerated motion. The actual formulas can be derived directly using Calculus, but here are the step by step instructions for deriving two of the more useful constant acceleration formulas.

This first version combines two different average velocity formulae with the acceleration formula to create a formula that is often used to find the change in displacement of an object undergoing uniform acceleration. The beauty of this formula is that it does not require knowledge of the final velocity of the object.

The second formula makes use of the same three basic formulas but manipulates them to end up with a formula that does not contain time.
