This is a good commercial electrophorus and is similar to the student made ones you'd encounter in the static labs in the Science Joy Wagon workbooks.
Produce a strong spark repeatedly, without recharging. When surfaces are clean and the humidity is not excessive, sparks 6mm long can be produced over many days after the initial charging. The base is thick plastic with four rubber feet attached for convenient handling. The plastic material produces a strong frictional charge when rubbed with fur or other material. This charge is held for long periods. Its flatness and high rigidity also insure minimum separation and maximum induction, between the dielectric and the removable plate. The 18cm diameter aluminum plate is designed to eliminate any sharp edges which could cause leakage. This, combined with its high capacitance due to size, permits it to acquire and transport substantial charges. An insulating handle is attached. For charging, a fur friction pad is recommended, but not included. With instructions.

Ideal for a wide variety of experimental situations, a knob on top of the stopper accepts a charge. When the charge enters the flask, the aluminum leaves separate. How much the leaves separate depends on the size of the charge. There’s no easier way to teach or observe this phenomenon. The electroscope consists of a 250ml Pyrex flask with a nickel-plated rod attached to a rubber stopper.

I really like this static version of the Genecon. It allows students and teacher to generate static electricity without all of the noise and hidden elements of the Van de Graaf generator.

Hand-Operated for Easy Use

Now the study of electrostatics is easier to conduct and more economical. High voltage static experiments that were once impossible without the use of a Van de Graaf generator are now possible with the innovative Static GENECON. This device creates a high voltage of over 10,000 V with only a simple turn of the generating roller. Size: 22.3cm L x 25.5 cm W x 7.5cm thick; weight: 400 g.
